This is my version of Jack Aubrey’s beloved frigate HMS Surprise, made famous in Patrick O’Brian’s novels. This version is based on plans contained in Brian Lavery and Geoff Hunt’s marvelous book “The Frigate Surprise,” and is not a kit. I scrounged everyday items from my scrap wood pile, from Carole’s quilting room, and from my medicine cabinet. It took a year to build and it isn’t finished yet. But I thought it would make a great image to go with my post on current events entitled “The Ship of State Sails in Troubled Waters.” The post will be up as soon as people smarter than me, who are reviewing it, tell me it makes sense. The painting behind the Surprise is of the battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Java during the War of 1812, in which the English learned the value of American oak the hard way.
